Fort Riley is quickly growing! There is a huge renovation going on with older housing and beautiful homes being built as well. We have one commissary that just got renovated and is bigger now. Two px's a USO Warrior Zone several shoppettes and several eateries.

Fort Riley is great for the outdoorsy type there's camping fishing and hunting. Manhattan is a few miles away and is also quickly growing. Manhattan is home of the KState Wildcats so it's a place of many activities and festivals.

We have been here since 2009 and I have found that it is a great place to raise your children. The schools are great!

Angie T. asks: My husband is graduating from AIT next week. His orders the week after Christmas said Ft. Lewis. Today they changed it to Ft. Riley. :( Is it normal for them to change so much? If so maybe they'll change it again lol Any advice on our first PCS would be appreciated. Looks like Ft. Riley. :(  I heard it's awful there and it's a 4 month wait for housing.

Brittany W. says: They backdate to when your hubby went to BCT.  It's a shorter wait than many. I heard its great for families!

Lori T. says: Riley is awful if you make it that way. Manhattan has lots of parks lakes camping areas. They also have a new discovery center for families. Lots of walking areas along the Konza Prairie. Topeka is only 45 mins away and of course KC is not far. If you love nature then you will have stuff to do. If you sit in your home hoping for things to come to you then yes you will not like it. YOU make it what it is.

I am active Army and just PCS-ed to Fort Riley, KS. So far I am liking being closer to family in Iowa. I am a chemical soldier and just came from a chem company in Washington. I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t have a pinpoint unit yet and don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t know what my mission will be.

I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve been here less than two weeks and it has not been the best experience, but that means it can only get better. Hopefully.

From our Give-Away Barbara posted about Fort Riley:

We have been stationed at Ft. Riley for a little over a year now. It is surrounded by three small towns Manhattan, Ogden, and Junction City.

Manhattan seems to be the most prefered to live in since it has a lot more entertaiment and is the ?¢‚Ǩ?ìnicer?¢‚Ǩ¬ù town out of the three. Manhattan is the home of Kansas State University so you will see more college students in this area. The University is located in the center of town (downtown area) and close by is the restaurants/bar area called Aggieville. Aggieville is made up of about 4-6 blocks of bars and restaurants as well as small local shops. This is where the nightlife is if you enjoy going out to bars. Manhattan is the only town (of the three) that has a small decent mall with some popular stores (Dillards, Sears, JC Penny) and other small stores (wetseal, maurices, gap, claires, etc). If you enjoy shopping I would recomend driving to Topeka (1 hr away) or Kansas City (2hrs away) for bigger malls and great shopping. Manhattan is the farthest away from a Ft. Riley gate. About 6 miles or so from the West (and closest) side of town.

Junction City is located on the other side of Ft. Riley and is not as popular as Manhattan due to the lack of restaurants, shopping, and newer housing. This town is a lot smaller but it has close access to two Ft. Riley gates just between 1-2 miles away. There is not a whole lot to do in town and for good restaurants, shopping , and other activities you have to either travel to Manhattan, Topeka or even Kansas City.

Ogden is located right outside one of the main Ft. Riley gates and is right before Manhattan. Ogden is a very small town with only one Main road leading to the gate. It has only one Subway and a greek restaurant located right outside the gate. There is no shopping (not even a walmart or grocery store) so for groceries or any other need you would have to drive to either Junction City or Manhattan which is about 15 minutes each way.

Ft. Riley is a hunter?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s paradise with many outdoor activities readily available for the service member and families. Most of the activites offered here at Ft. Riley include fishing, hunting, and hiking trails. There are several lakes and rivers around the area which is nice to take your family to in the summer.

Weather: Weather in Kansas is extreme. It could be a high of 80 one day and the next 3-6 inches of snow will fall. Kansas has some long winters. It doesn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t stop snowing until late March early April. Summers are hot and sticky so trips to the lake and rivers is a must.

Been here at Ft Riley for over two years now and I love it. We bought a house in a nice area and hopefully we can stay for longer than the normal three years.
